Capitalism not poverty behind Opium boom
Posted on March 15, 2008
Those that hate America have been saying that the recent boom of opium production in Afghanistan was because the war caused poverty to increase and the only thing the poor starving farmers could do to stay alive was grow the hated poppie plant. That it was sheer desperation.
Not so much! Turns out that the opium poppy farmers are among the most affluent farmers in the country. The boom is because the Tailban is busy fighting us and not going after the farmers for being to affluent. In fact that Tailban has started looking like theUS Democrats in taxing the rich to fund their political ambitions of taking over the government.
“Today, the most significant factor affecting the scale of cultivation among opium poppy farmers appears to be the security situation,” the UNODC said. [UN office on drugs and crime]
