Mike McIntyre is a Blue Dog Democrat.

The Blue Dogs are balking at fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax that will pick the pockets of middle class taxpayers unless Congress sends the fix to the President for his signature. Read Don Surber’s take on this.

The say they are being Fiscally Conservative by demanding a new tax increase to offset the “losses” for not picking all those pockets. A true fiscal conservative would see that the increased revenue from the AMT is new money! They did not pay it last year but they will pay it next April 15th if the change isn’t made. That is called a tax increase, even if it is only happening because a badly flawed law is not fixed.

A real fiscal conservative would simply demand a cut in spending, not new taxes.

Ok they believe cutting the AMT will cost $50 billion, the earmarks in the appropriations bills they just sent to the President would save about 10% of that. Did any members of the Blue Dog caucus vote to strip out the earmarks? Let me guess - no. I know McIntyre did not.

Now if they are serious about being fiscally conservative they could surely find the $50 billion or maybe look at history and find that they could raise revenue by CUTTING TAXES. It has worked every time it has been tried all the way back to Kennedy. You cut taxes, you increase revenues.

I know, I know, as Democrats - Blue Dog or not, they firmly believe that they must penalize people who achieve by taxing them more - not less.

Such fiscal conservatism this country can’t afford.

The AMT was never intended to do what it does now. The problem is that once a politician gets their hands on another source of revenue, they’re never giving it up. To do so, would be to cede some of their power back to the people. A proposition that they aren’t interested in.
