A Day in the life of a Do Nothing Congress

Posted on October 30, 2007

Today the Do nothing Democrat controlled Congress while not acting to fulfill their obligations of funding the government, a job they are now fully 30 days over due on they:

They agreed with the Senate version of the Internet tax freedom bill (and thanks to Sen. Sununu for helping get that done)

Spent four hours on one minute speeches

Discussed naming October 2007 “Country Music Month” (Gee that is timely - one day left)

Then spent two and a half hours amending the Small Business Contracting Program including an amendment “regarding assistance to individuals not lawfully within the United States” but they also put in that agency employees cannot fly first class or business class with funds from the bill.

Debated for half an hour and then passed a bill requiring weather radios in all new mobile homes.

Spent half an hour passing bills on subpoenas for 9/11 lawsuits, family leave act to include airline flight crews

Passed a bill to make a breast cancer research postage stamp

Renamed two post offices

Passed resolutions about honoring the firefighters and supporting the victims in the California fires and the 40th Anniversary of the Mass Movement for Soviet Jewish Freedom and the 20th Anniversary of the Freedom Sunday Rally for Soviet Jewry

But they did not even discuss the appropriations bills. Or I should say they did not discuss them in public. They have their “secret” plan to combine all appropriations - including all the massive earmarks they said last year they would stop - and give President Bush the option of signing it or having the government shut down. I say he should Veto it and shut it down. Giving the country a few days without some of the bureaucracy would probably be refreshing!
