Laura Bush wears Arab headscarf - horrors!

Seems that some people had a knee jerk reaction seeing this picture of Mrs. Bush in a head scarf.

I am not up on fashion but it seems to me that wearing a scarf is sort of a personal decision for Western women. Be that as it may, it would be a diplomatic faux paux to be given a headscarf as a gift and then not model it?

As far as I can determine she did not wear the scarf to comply with Saudi custom, nor to seek favor with the Saudi government. She wore it because a woman who happens to be a breast cancer survivor (and am I imagining things but sometimes isn’t there a reason for women fighting cancer to wear a scarf - other than fashion or religious custom - oh, yeah, their hair falls out from the treatments!)

I think she is a wonderful ambassador.
